Repairing the Kopuwai Murals
Room 6 is repairing the murals which were created by the students of Room 6 in 2014. Some of the paint used has lifted the anti-graffiti shield and has bubbled the surface. Our mission is to fix them! We started on Friday with the help of Ollie's mum, Odelle. The first helpers sanded and scraped some of the paint.

We thought they have smurf hands from the blue paint!

Observational Drawing—Portrait Drawing
Visual Arts Term 1
2015

Our Learning Focus:
· Learn about the maths behind drawing a portrait—using guide lines to know where
facial features go and how big they are
· Draw what we see—look and draw
· Explore shape, tone and line using different drawing tools. We used drawing pencils and chalk pastel

Our art sessions included:
1. Drawing a picture of a face without any teaching. We stored it away in our folder to reflect on after some practice
2. Learning and practising drawing a portrait with drawing pencils using the guidelines
3. Using a photo of ourselves exploring tone – noticing darker and lighter areas of our faces. We used a brown chalk pastel to shape the face, then had to visualise where to place the facial features. We had to apply our learning. We used an eraser to rub out areas of darker tone and a white chalk pastel to highlight areas of lighter tone. We also explored smudging the chalk pastel to blend or show shape
4. We used a black chalk pastel to outline and shade darker tone areas of our face. Then we used a light flesh colour to show areas of lighter tone. At the end we used other colours to add detail and colour to our portraits
5. Finally we reflected on our efforts—What we now know, what we still thought we needed to focus on, what helped our leaning. We also had to draw a portrait using the guidelines that we could use to teach someone else about the maths of drawing a portrait

Enjoy our work. We selected the work we thought best showed our progress. The little cut out drawing on our boards shows the first picture we drew before any teaching.
At the end of the term we reflected on our efforts. Our reflections were thoughtful and honest.
