EOTC Week 2016

We started our EOTC week today (Monday 14 March). What a fantastic start to the week. We had our big bike adventure to McNulty Inlet and Rotary Glen. We biked around the lake track, had lunch and played t-ball before biking back to school. The day definitely got the 'thumbs up' from the children. Thanks to all the parents and Mr Milford who supported us on the trip. We simply couldn't have done it without you all. Enjoy some photos taken during the day.
 All ready to leave!

Crossing onto Neplusultra Street. Then our big long snake of bikers down the street!

Heading along the lake track towards the big bridge.

Enjoying lunch in the shade, before launching into the t-ball competition.

Believe it or not, this was fielding! The ball is in there somewhere :)
 The batters in action.

In between those lips is the longest lasting gum snake I know of! Cruze was getting every morsel of sweetness and enjoyment out it.

The boys at the back keeping me company! Awesome effort guys - thanks.

Tuesday of EOTC Week

The Legend of Kopuwai and a trip to the Cromwell College Auditorium
Today we learnt about our local Maori Legend - Kopuwai the Water Swallower. Cromwell College has a mural at the back of its audtiorium which represents a part of the legend where the Rapuwai tribe seek revenge on Kopuwai and his two headed dogs. Kopuwai had captured Kaiamio and made her his slave wife.
The children had a good understanding of the legend before visiting the College. However special thanks to Mrs Koopu, who was able to share with us the history behind the creation of the mural, the panels at the front of the auditorium and the panel in the entrance foyer. We now feel like we have a stronger connection with the mural and what it represents.

Get your child to explain to you what they remember about the panels and mural.

The Legend of Kopuwai suggests that the body of Kopuwai was turned to stone and is the 26m stone pillar on the Old Man Range.

Trip to Old Cromwell

Today we walked to Old Cromwell. We stopped off at the Junction on the way to Old Cromwell to view the 'Molyneux touch stone' Room 6 placed there last year. We talked about the history behind Molyneux being the name for the now Clutha River. You might like to check out the school web site to find the locations of the other three touch stones Room 6 placed in the Nevis, Carrick and Bendigo last year.

After visiting the touch stone, we walked down to Old Cromwell, ate our lunch, then did some landscape drawing. We had been learning about 'mark making' and how shapes, lines, curves and marks can represent what we see in a landscape. We also discovered that what we see in the foreground is more detailed and usually darker in colour. In the background the landscape becomes smudgier, lighter and less detailed as it is further away.

After working on our landscape drawing we walked up to Hullabaloo, the local art gallery in Old Cromwell. Many thanks to Ro Bradshaw who showed us landscape art works in the gallery and talked us about different materials which can be used to create landscapes.

At the Junction. Ollie was sharing with us the discoveries we made about the Molyneux River.

Eating lunch at Old Cromwell and trying to keep the pesky ducks from eating out lunch!

Landscape drawing. These photos show our view and the landscapes we selected from to draw.

In Hullabaloo with Ro Bradshaw learning about the different types of landscapes created by artists.

Thursday - Oamaru Stone Carving

Thanks so much to all the parent helpers today and Robyn and Bob Galvin. We loved our day and really appreciate your help. Thanks also to all the people who lent us tools - parents and the Otago Polytech.
Our afternoon started with a block of Oamaru stone in front of us and ended with a face full of dust, clothes looking a shade of white and a magnificent letter of our first name. Enjoy our photos.

We had fun!

Making Ginger Beer

We are going to make ginger beer to sell at the school fair in the fourth term. First we started by making our ginger beer bug. We fed the bug for 7 days before making our ginger beer. We bottled, capped and have stored our ginger beer so it can keep creating more bubbles. In 6 weeks time we'll sell our amazing ginger beer to waiting and appreciative customers!

After we bottled our ginger beer,we split the ginger beer bugs and lots of us took a bug home so we could feed it and make our own brew at home.

Please click the recipe below to take you to the recipe for the ginger beer.

Junior Cross Country Thursday 13 August

We had the most fantastic afternoon for our cross country. We also had great keen and determined kids and supporters. What amazing participation in the parent and child race. In some cases grandparent and child. We loved the attitude and willingness. Take a look and see for yourselves:

Max, your nana deserves an extra big hug!!

Dame Lynley Dodd Visited Cromwell Primary School Today

We had a fabulous time today entertaining Dame Lynley Dodd with our Slinky Malinki creations, writing and art work. We discovered lots of interesting information about Dame Lynley's life as a writer and illustrator. We also discovered lots of information about the characters - Slinky Malinki is based on an actual cat. Scarface Claw is too!
Enjoy some of the photos we took today from Dame Lynley's visit.

We used our finger prints to create Slinky Malinki cats.

Slinky Malinki is having a Birthday!

Dame Lynley Dodd is coming to visit Cromwell Primary School in Term 3 as part of the  Slinky Malinki's birthday celebrations. We have been doing some fun activities during the week to enjoy the rich language Lynley Dodd uses in her books and create some memorable 'Slinky Malinki' moments of our own.
Today we created 'Wanted' Posters of a villain - Slinky Malinki!. We also made our own 'Slinky Malinki' cupcakes. Check out the action and fun:

EOTC Week 2015

We have just completed the most amazing EOTC week in Room 6. A huge thank you to all the parents. You  were outstanding. We couldn't have done all the trips and activities without your help - transport, supervision and encouraging.
Have a read and look at what we have been up to.

Monday 9 March
Big Big Ride to Rotary Glen

Some stories from the camp diaries:

I was huffing and puffing across the bumps. I burst with sweat. And I could saw everybody trying hard. The scary rattling of cars going across the bridge was singing in my ear. I felt like jumping off and walking.
By Helena

Wow! That was a big bike ride on Monday. I had a crash. My wheel hit a piece of wood and I wobbled off into the rocky sand.
By Emmanuel

"Let the parents have a go," I shouted.
My mum had a go and my mum missed 3 times. It was a little embarrassing. Then Mrs Huffadine missed 4 times. It was more embarrassing than my mum!

Bump! My front wheel hit the ground as i prepared to do a wheelie. I heaved my bike in to the air.
By Arlo

Tuesday 10 March
Learning More About Kopuwai
We walked up to Cromwell College to learn more about our local legend Kopuwai. Mrs Koopu talked to us about the mural at the back of the auditorium. She was teaching at the College when the mural was created, so was our local expert!

More stories from the camp diaries:

Ouch, ahh. This is a tirying walk. I drag myself up a steep, steep hill, step by step.
By Ollie

We suddenly started to walk to the college. We were going to hear more about Kaiamio. The girl was fishing. Kopuwai captured the sgirl. Kopuwai thought she was too beautiful to eat.
By Josh M

I walked into the big audtiorium. There were so many beautiful carvings on the wall. There were warriors and Kopuwai and Kaiamio.
By Joseph

On Tuesday our class went to college to learn more about Kopuwai. He was orange. We saw Mrs Koopu. I saw my friends at college. When you look up close at the mural, it feels like you're falling. Going to college is weird because they change classes. They do fitness too. It was a fun day!!
By Toby

I was bursting to get to the college. We finally got there. I looked up and I saw a colourful wall. It had lots of funny pictures on it. I saw an evil ugly beast and his two vicious dogs.
By Joshua E

Wednesday 11 March
Walk Along the Lake Track
This was rated by some boys as, 'The biggest challenge, but the biggest thumbs up!". That was before the sleep over on Thursday night. The sleep over I think then become the 'biggest thumbs up!"

Yet more stories from the camp diaries:

I tiredly, lazily walked to a tree with lots of branches. It was the perfect tree for a stop  to eat. When we went to a steep hill, I tumbled down to the bottom and crashed up at the top to lie down.
By Taylor

I burst with sweat. It was like a rain puddle on the ground. My eyes were watering and my face was red. The prickly bushes were looking on my sweat shirt. 'It was tiring," I said.

Thursday 12 March
The Sleep Over at School
During the day we did lots of camp group challenges  - choosing as a camp duty group how we were going to wear our bandannas and creating a team label for our duty poster

There's more diary stories:

Ohh, haa, og, hoo. I was snoring my head off. I felt like sleeping for 20 hours. But it was my birthday. I jumped out of bed. I said it was my birthday. I opened my first present. It was a tablet case. I opened another one. It was a tablet. I was so happy. I shouted, "I got a tablet." I thought I only was allowed one when I was 9.
By Chase

Bam. As I bashed the ball, it went flying in the air. I got a home run and went to the back. A minute later, it was my turn again. I did another great hit. I ran to the first base, then base 2, then the next base. Home run!
By Oscar

Friday 12 March
The Day After - Clean Up and Lasting the Remainder of the Day!!
Diary writing - the final day

I had a lot of fun. We had breakfas. We played T-ball. We made our own lunch. We did orienteering yesterday. I was so tired I could have slept on one whole car, even though it would be uncomfortable. Now that's tired!
By Billy

I stuffed the sleeping bag into the greasy slippery bag. It took ages and ages until it got into the silky bag. George had to come and helped.
By Elliet

So much fun...
Pete came and took the Room 6 musicians for ukulele. This is a must watch event!!

Real Road Art Show
Yesterday, 17 November we were lucky enough to visit the Real Road Art Show. There was amazing art works. It was fantastic to see such a range of different work created by New Zealand artists. We were also lucky enough to get given our own road show visual diary to sketch and draw in.

Receiving our visual diaries and pencils for observational drawing of landscapes.
