Reading

The following are expected milestones after each year at school. These milestones form part of the NZ National Standards for reading

After 1 Year At School (RedBlue and Green Books)
· Know and use individual sounds and known parts of words to help read tricky words
· Become more independent at reading—checking on yourself—making sure what you read looks and sounds right
· Read with expression
· Understand the meaning of punctuation
· Retell main points of a story
· Interpret simple diagrams, speech bubbles
· Make sense of what you read
· Demonstrate awareness of active reading strategies—Making Connections, Prediction and Re Prediction, Visualisation, Asking and Answering Questions, Inference, Retelling , Summarising

After 2 Years At School (Orange and Turquoise Books)
· Use chunks of known words to help read tricky words
· Know and use some prefixes and suffixes
· Be a confident and independent reader—checking on self, re running, making sure what you read looks and sounds right
· Read with expression
· Find meaning of unknown words by using information from photos, captions or re reading
· Select appropriate books and read independently for 15 minutes
· Explain plot, characters, themes and retell main points
· Actively demonstrate reading  strategies— Making Connections, Prediction and Re Prediction, Visualisation, Asking and Answering Questions, Inference, Retelling , Summarising

After 3 Years At School (Purple and Gold)
· Read with good expression, using punctuation and voice for affect
· Independent use of reading strategies to read for accuracy and ensure you understand what you are reading. Re-reading if necessary when meaning is lost
· Identify and keep track of ideas and information when reading longer sections of text
· Locate evidence in the text—beginning to skim and scan
· Use knowledge of words and sayings to explain word meanings and sayings used in texts, offer synonyms and want to understand
· Use graphs, text boxes, illustrations to access information
· Know common prefixes and suffixes and what they mean
· Apply reading strategies with longer more complex texts
· Retell main points of a story
· Interpret simple diagrams, speech bubbles
· Make sense of what you read
· Demonstrate awareness of active reading strategies—Making Connections, Prediction and  re prediction, visualisation, Asking and answering questions, inference, retelling and summarising)


Week 7 Term 3
We created a 'wordle' with all our topic nouns we have learnt during inquiry work. We used it as our poem for the week.
